A word from Deaf Pastor Jim Walterhouse

I was born with normal hearing but when I was about six years old I had a high fever and became profoundly deaf as a result. For many years I was mad at God because I was deaf. One day I learned that God made me special because I am deaf. I found out that God loves me and I accepted His plan for my life. Now I am happy to be deaf- and a child of God.

I went to Bible College to learn about deaf ministry and met my wife, Debbie, who is deaf also. God gave us two sons who are hearing but both are proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and love the deaf.

After Bible College we moved to Florida and started two deaf ministries. Then God called us to go to Mexico and start a church for the deaf in the city of Tampico. We went there and God allowed us to start the church, build a building, and train a man to be the pastor of the church. Then we asked God, "What next?"

While we were in Mexico, we visited at Baptist Temple and became friends with many of the deaf members. After we were done with the work in Mexico, God touched the heart of the pastor of the hearing church to hire us to work with the deaf at Baptist Temple. We are excited to be here and to see what God will do here.
